Congratulations to Dr. Ted Logan, the recipient of the Section’s Outstanding Service Award this year. Not only has Ted been a major contributor to the activities of the section for many years, he has vigorously represented our interests as a councillor and active committee member with the national ACS. He is thoroughly deserving of this honor.

Please join us for our annual Party Night on Friday, June 5th, at the Syndicate Restaurant in Newport, KY. I think we have arranged an enjoyable and affordable evening. Seating is limited, so please make reservations for yourself and your guest(s) as early as possible.

From I-75: Take Exit 192 (Fifth Street Covington Exit) then follow Route 8 east for approximately 1.5 miles to the Syndicate. Note that you will cross the Licking River going from Covington to Newport. The Syndicate will be on your right after you cross York Street.

From I-471: Take the Newport Bellevue Route 8 Exit (first Kentucky exit coming from Cincinnati). At the light, turn left and continue to Fourth Street, then turn right. Turn onto York Street; at the next block, turn left onto Fifth Street. The Syndicate will be on your right.

From Downtown: From Pete Rose Way, just east of the Crown, take the Taylor Southgate Bridge (formerly the Central Bridge). Turn left at the third traffic light (Fifth Street). The Syndicate will be on your right.

T. J. Logan, Outstanding Service Award Winner!

It is a pleasure to announce that Dr. Ted Logan has been chosen as recipient of the Outstanding Servce Award of the Section for 1998.

Anyone who attends our section meetings regularly knows Ted Logan. He has been an ACS member since 1954 and has held numerous offices and committee assignments in the section and in the national ACS organization.

He retired from the Procter and Gamble Company in 1996, as Associate Director, Technical Recruiting. Prior to his position in recruiting he held positions in basic research and applied industrial R and D. He has 30 US and foreign patents and 30 technical and career-related publications.

Ted’s service to the section has encompassed many years and many different offices. He was treasurer of the section from 1962-1964; vice chair, 1964-1965; and chair, 1965-66. He has been a councilor for the section since 1982. In recent years he has been very active in the national organization, having served on the following committees: Education, Meetings and Expositions, Economic and Professional Affairs, Corporation Associates, Science, Board Task Force on Immigration, and Council Policy Committee.

Other activities include serving as a consultant to the NSF for various studies, giving 50 university lectures on career opportunities, and being a co-founder and charter member of the National Recruiting Managers Organization.

In a local section contest several years ago, Ted submitted the winning name for CINTACS. Since his retirement, he has become even more active in section affairs, submitting an article to CINTACS on section demographics and one on Sally Vonderbrink, in addition to a book review. He will lead the Regional Awards committee for the 2000 Central Regional ACS meeting.

Ted was responsible for getting our Career Services committee started; this is the function that Janna Strobel has continued for the last several years, maintaining a table at the local meetings for job-seeking chemists.

Although no records are kept, he may have the best lifetime attendance record of any member. He has been a wonderful asset to the section with his contacts to national, to industry, and to academia. Retirement from work seems only to have increased his commitment to the section.

He was nominated by Bill Oliver, of Northern Kentucky University, and seconded by Joseph Kaczvinsky of Procter & Gamble, and Richard Fayter of Henkel Corporation. (This article liberally quotes Dr. Oliver’s letter of nomination - Thanks, Bill.)

Reminder - nominations for Chemist of the Year, Chemical Technician/Research Assistant, High School Teacher of Year, Middle School/Junior High School Science Teacher of the Year, Elementary School Science Teacher of the Year will be due in the fall.

And, the nominations for Outstanding Service Award is due early 1999

We were able to attract a number of nominations for each award this year. This made our job a real and difficult task - of choosing among several very qualified candidates. But - we had to (literally) beat the bushes, beg, threaten, and cajole people to make nominations. And, there were folks who wanted more time (generally we gave a day or two) to finish a nomination at the last moment.

So, please be thinking about these awards, and plan to make your nomination early next fall. We will ask for updates for the nominees who were not chosen, because we felt that each nominee was deserving, and should be considered again. However, there are others who should be added to the list, and now is the time to begin thinking of this important matter.

In 2000, the Cincinnati Section will host the 32nd Central Regional Meeting. The last time the Section hosted the meeting was in 1992. The 1992 meeting was a enormous success with a total of 613 papers and posters and over 1500 official registrants. The success of the meeting was entirely attributable to the dedicated volunteer effort of over 100 of the Section's members.

The 32nd meeting offers the opportunity for the members of the Section to display their professional spirit once again. Volunteers are needed to serve as both chairs and members of the following committees:

Planning for the meeting must begin within the next few months making it critical to fill committee positions before the end of the calendar year. Anyone wishing to volunteer or with an interest in potentially chairing a technical session/symposium should contact Ray D'Alonzo, Meeting General Chair, by phone at 626-1977 or by email at dalonzorp@pg.com as soon as possible.

The Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to announce that Emily Balskus, a student at Ursuline Academy, has qualified for the U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp. This camp will be held at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 7-21, 1998. Twenty students from around the country have been invited to participate in the intensive training camp. The top four students will be chosen to represent the U.S. at the International Chemistry Olympiad to be held in Melbourne, Australia, July 5-14, 1998. Last year the U.S. Team earned one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal at the international competition. A total of 184 students represented 47 countries in the 1997 International Chemistry Olympiad.
